MYANMAR

January 2010

It is a year ago that I have arrived in the Union of Myanmar also known as Burma. Heading the logistic department of a multi million rehabilitation program to support the recovery of rural communities in the Ayewaddy Delta following the fatal cyclone Nargis in May 2008 I gladly signed an extension of my contract and will remain at least until March 2010 in this beautiful and fascinating country.

I can say that I have not been working in any other country where the work has been so well received. The communities in which we work on livelihood recovery, disaster risk reduction, shelter provision, school construction and water, sanitation and hygiene promotion really deserve and really appreciate our inputs and assistance.

The work is rewarding despite many difficulties and constrains the program faces day in and day out namely poor infrastructure, bureaucratic procedures, challenging climatic conditions and the complex social fabric of the communities we work in.

A picture gallery of my mission in Myanmar will be opened after my assignment has been concluded.
