MV “Cap Anamur” was a humanitarian support vessel supposed to provide logistical support for humanitarian projects on land, which left the home port of Luebeck in February 2005. Following the original idea of the first Cap Anamur mission the ship was also prepared to take people on board in emergency situations including people in distress and refugees being repatriated. Sailing along the coastal waters of Western Africa, the ship carried humanitarian relief items such as food, medical equipment and construction materials to support humanitarian actions in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Angola.
The trip was interrupted twice due to mechanical problems (engine), but was able to continue in June 2005. Coincidently a dingy in distress packed with African refugees was picked up by MV “Cap Anamur” in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. The following difficulties to discharge the rescued people were widely covered by media and interpreted differently. Nevertheless, the rescue of those people was a landmark for the European Human Rights movement and forced various member states of the European Union to review current policies and political agendas.
